For today’s dive into the world automotive etymology, we take a look at the Volkswagen Tiguan, VW’s small family-friendly crossover.
Based on the Golf, the Tiguan is Volkswagen’s most affordable SUV, sitting considerably underneath the larger, more expensive, Porsche-based Touareg.
The name Tiguan is a portmanteau (combination) of the German words for tiger and iguana: Tiger and Leguan. The name was the winner of a competition run by Volkswagen and German magazine Auto Bild.
Tiguan defeated its contenders (Nanuk, Namib, Rockton and Samun) to be emblazoned in chrome on the rump of VW’s small crossover.
