VolkswagenEos

Volkswagen Eos etymology: What is it named after?

Based on the contemporary Golf and Passat, the 4-seat Volkswagen Eos was a convertible with a folding hardtop. It’s pretty, but what does the name Eos mean?

The hardtop convertible Volkswagen Eos is named for the Eos (below), the ancient Greek goddess of the dawn, who rises each morning from her home in Oceanus. So, if you own an Eos, pay it a true homage, and drive it top-down at sunrise on day.

Eos’ brother is Helios, god of the sun, while her sister Selene is goddess of the moon.

We can’t help but wonder if Volkswagen’s naming committee are fans of The Simpsons. After all in the episode “Oh, Brother where art thou?”, Homer’s half-brother chastises his employees about why they named his company’s new car Persephone, after a hungry, old, Greek god.
