Toyota Tank and Roomy: Big space, small footprint, no guns or tracks

The new JDM 2016 Toyota Tank and Roomy small minivans have sliding doors, and have a naturally aspirated or turbo 1-liter I3 under the hood.

Built by Daihatsu, which sells its version as the Thor, the Tank and Roomy are the same car, but have different headlamps, taillamp graphics, grilles, and bumpers. The Tank is sportier (dynamic Toyota says), but the Roomy has more chrome, and is more in your face (or “dignity and brilliance” according to Toyota).

There are two engines available: a naturally aspirated 1-liter 3-cylinder gas engine with 51kW (68hp), and 92Nm (68 lb-ft), and turbo version of that with 72kW (97hp), and 140Nm (103 lb-ft).

The 1-liter turbo is purely FWD, while the naturally engine is available in FWD and AWD.

The rear seats slide, recline up to 70 degrees, and dive into the floor for a completely flat load area. There’s also large door grips, a surround view camera system, a 4.2-inch touchscreen, and Smart Assist II collision avoidance

Prices for both the Tank and Roomy start at ¥1,463,400 (US$13,800) for the FWD X with the naturally aspirated engine, and end at ¥1,965,600 (US$18,600) for the turbocharged Custom G-T in FWD.
