Toyota Camry: Some US models may be made in Japan

Following on from yesterday’s article that Subaru has shelved plans to build the next generation XV Crosstrek in the US, is news that Toyota is considering moving some US-market Camry production back to Japan.

Sources have informed Reuters that Toyota is contemplating exporting Camrys from Japan to North America in the near future.

The process of importing a small percentage of Camrys from Japan stopped around the time that Toyota began production of top-selling sedan at Subaru’s Lafayette, Indiana plant.

Now with the yen falling to its lowest point, since 2007, against the US dollar, the mathematics are moving back in favour of resuming imports from Japan.

It’s likely, given the differences between the Asian Camry and the US/Australian version, that imports from Japan, were they to happen, won’t occur until the next generation model bows.
