NissanMurano

Nissan Murano etymology: What does its name mean?

The Nissan Murano is one of the company’s large crossover SUVs and places an emphasis on style over space, but what is it named after, if anything?

The Nissan Murano is named after the islands of Murano, Italy. The islands are about 1.5km away from the main collection of islands that make up Venice, and is technically a part of that city.

The seven islands of Murano are famed for its glass making. Venice banished all its glass makers to Murano in 1291 due to the risk of fires.

The original Z50 Nissan Murano, released in 2002, is said to have been inspired by Muranese glass work. One of the hero colours of the Nissan Murano over the years has been a shade of orange used by glass makers on the Italian island.
