Nissan wants Nismo subsidiary to one day be considered on par with BMW’s M and AMG from Mercedes-Benz, but what does its name mean?
Nismo is simply a contraction of two words: Nissan and Motorsports. Appropriate really when the subsidiary is tasked with developing many of the company’s factory-backed race cars, tuned specials and modification kits.
Nissan Motorsports International, to use the company’s full name, was started in 1984 after Nissan merged together its two previous motorsports outlets, Publication Division 3 for privateer outfits and Special Car Testing Division for factory teams.
