Mitsubishi caught fudging fuel economy numbers by Nissan

Mitsubishi has been caught out cheating on its fuel economy numbers in Japan by one of its joint venture partners in the kei car space, Nissan.

Since 2013, Mitsubishi has produced the second generation eK Wagon and eK Space kei cars. These were also sold as the Nissan Dayz and Dayz Roox.

At some point, Nissan did some internal fuel economy testing of the Dayz and Dayz Roox, and notice that its figures didn’t line up with those published by Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi held a press conference on April 20, with senior executives apologizing for falsifying its mileage numbers.

The Mitsubishi eK Wagon and eK Space, and Nissan Dayz and Dayz Roox have been withdrawn from sale. Around 157,000 eK Wagon and eK Space models are affected, with about 468,000 Dayz and Dayz Roox also caught up in the scandal.
