Mazda MX-5 Miata might go electric or hybrid for fifth generation

The next generation (NE) Mazda MX-5 Miata might be available with an electric or hybrid powertrain, although nothing’s been decided yet.

Ichiro Hirose, head of research and development at Mazda, told Autocar, “The preference of people who enjoy driving sports cars might be changing, so we need to think about what direction society is going. We want to look at the best powertrain to keep the vehicle lightweight, but because of the diversifying requirements and preference, we need to explore various options.”

If Mazda decides to go with a hybrid or fully electric powertrain, Hirose says lightweight and small size are key ingredients in the MX-5, and any hybrid or electric version needs to stick to that.
