Hyundai Tiburon etymology: What does its name mean?

The Hyundai Tiburon was the company’s FWD coupe between 1996 and 2008. But what does the name of Hyundai’s first truly sporty car mean?

Yes, sorry, S-Coupe fans, that car looked like the Excel coupe that it was, and was about as sporty as a wet sponge.

Back to the Tiburon, its name is Spanish for shark — actually it’s spelt tiburón in Spanish, but what’s an accent between friends? Given the styling of the first generation Tiburon (above) that seems wholly appropriate.

Interestingly, it was only the second generation Tiburon (known as the Tuscani in South Korea) that featured gills in the front fenders.
