Due to be revealed in early 2016, the Hyundai Ioniq is the brand’s first dedicated hybrid, PHEV and EV, but what does its name mean?
According to Hyundai, the name Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. Ions are electrically charged atoms and an essential component of batteries, especially those required in hybrid and other electrified vehicles.
Hyundai claims that the Ioniq justifies its unique moniker as it is first car to be offered as a regular petrol-electric hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure EV in the one body shell.
The company says that the Ioniq’s badge, with a missing section in the Q is said to represent the car’s status as a breakthrough “acknowledging the fresh new approach of this advanced, low-emission model”.
