Who wants an electric hot hatch or an affordable Tesla with big brand build quality? Well, the EU’s tough emissions regulations might make that a reality.
Because of tightening emissions regulations, Albert Biermann, Hyundai’s head of high performance vehicles, says an Ioniq N is not a crazy idea.
“Were we to find a nice battery, a bigger motor and inverter, we could make an Ioniq EV N with a nice chassis and more power,” Biermann told Automotive News. “Something like that is not fully crazy.”
The Ioniq EV N hot hatch might not come soon, though. Biermann said, “When we think of cars after 2021 for N [division], I think we cannot avoid electrification. We will have an EV sooner or later. It’s just a matter of timing.”
The Ioniq electric hatch has an electric motor with 88kW (118hp) and 295Nm (218 lb-ft). The EPA gives the hatch a range rating of 124mi (180km) with its 28kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.
