Although Geely owns both Volvo and London Taxis, its not a household name in West. What does its name mean, if anything?
Geely’s Chinese name is 吉利, pronounced Jí-lì, and translates to auspicious and lucky.
While many Chinese car makers are owned by state and provincial governments, Geely is a privately owned and run company, although it did start out as a state-owned firm.
Geely began making motorcycles in the 1990s, and started car manufacturing in 2002. It completed its purchase of Volvo from Ford in 2010, and finished its takeover of the London Taxi company, maker of the city’s famous black cabs, in 2013.
