Fiat Chrysler has confirmed that the Mazda MX-5’s Italian twin will now be a Fiat model, while Alfa Romeo will create its own RWD convertible.
Meanwhile Alfa Romeo will develop a new generation Spider from the company’s upcoming Maserati-derived rear-wheel drive Giorgio platform. The Giorgio architecture will also be used for the company’s upcoming BMW 3-Series fighter, as well as its much delayed first-ever SUV.
Harald Wester, chief of both Maserati and Alfa Romeo, told Car magazine, “As far as the Spider goes, the final version is of course no longer the two-seater FCA [Fiat Chrysler Automobiles] co-developed with Mazda but a derivative of project Giorgio”.
He continued, “The Far East import will probably find a new home with Fiat-Abarth”.
