The Dodge Grand Caravan has been given a stay of execution until the 2017 model year, even though a new Chrysler minivan is slated to arrive early in 2016.
In an effort to eliminate internal competition, Fiat Chrysler had earlier announced plans to kill off the Dodge Caravan half of the Caravan/Town and Country twins.
According to Automotive News, this was meant to happen next year when FCA introduces an all-new Town and Country (Voyager for overseas markets).
A document seen by Automotive News states that the new Town and Country, codenamed RU, will begin production on February 26, 2016 in Windsor, Ontario as a 2017 model.
The 2017 Grand Caravan is said to be a fleet special, while the Town and Country will aim further upmarket.
A Dodge spokesperson told Automotive News, “While we’ve announced the Grand Caravan will eventually be the minivan that goes away, we’re not going into more detail at this time.”
