Due to public ill feeling towards President Donald Trump, Trumpchi, a Chinese car brand, will use a different name when it enters the USA market in 2019.
Zhang Fan, GAC Motor’s Design Director, told Reuters, “We saw people were laughing at this and took pictures looking only at this detail, and also put on Facebook or other websites. When we read all that feedback, we realized it might not be very positive promotion for the brand.
“At first I’d never thought of it, why change the name? It’s the president Americans selected, it’s similar to the president’s name, this has to be good right? But in the United States the level of opposition (to Trump) is high.”
Trumpchi is the luxury brand from GAC (Guangzhou Auto Group), and its Chinese name is Chuanqi, which means passing good fortune and is also play on the Chinese word for “legendary”.
Zhang says GAC translated that into Trumpchi in English because trump meant best, and chi stood for China.
