2017 GMC Acadia Limited: Larger first generation SUV lives on

The first and second generation GMC Acadia SUVs will be sold alongside each other for at least a year, with the older car being badged as the Acadia Limited.

As you’ve no doubt read already, the 2016 (second generation) GMC Acadia is a much small car than the original. Around 7 inches (178mm) shorter overall.

Given that the two cars are vastly different in size and price — the new one is both smaller and cheaper — it makes sense to sell the two generations side by side.

Brian Goebel, a GM spokesman, told Automotive News, “Given the fact that those sister vehicles will continue their production, the current Acadia will continue to be built to offer another option for our customers.”

The first generation Acadia, and the same under the skin Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave, are built in Lansing, and replacements for both the Chevy and Buick aren’t due until mid-2017.

Killing the old Acadia now potentially leaves that plant significantly under capacity, especially as the new smaller Acadia is built far, far away in Spring Hill, Tennessee at the old Saturn factory.
