Volkswagen Budd-e: An Microbus/Bulli EV with sliding doors

The Volkswagen Budd-e previews what a small electric minivan might look like in the year 2019. If it enters production it will be the spiritual successor to the iconic Beetle-based Microbus (Bulli in Europe).

The Budd-e rides on Volkswagen’s new MEB scalable component matrix for electric vehicles, and has an electric motor for the front and rear axle.

The 101kWh battery is integrated into the Budd-e’s floor, and is capable of 600km (373mi) of range. No power output is quoted, but top speed is quoted as a 150km/h (93mph).

At around 4.6m (181 inches) long, the Budd-e is sized between the Golf-based Touran and the van-based T6 Transporter.

There’s a 12.3-inch configurable curved display in front of the steering wheel, and a 13.3-inch unit for the infotainment system that includes gesture control.

Cameras replace exterior mirrors, and 7.9-inch screen on the driver’s side and 5.9-inch screen on the passenger’s side.
