For its next generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, GM will follow Ford in the use of aluminum, although it won’t construct the whole truck from the material.
Earlier this week GM announced that it will be investing US$877 million in its pickup truck factory in Flint, Michigan.
According to Reuters, the high cost of this plant overhaul is due to the fact that pickups made there will soon use newer body construction methods, including aluminum and high strength steel.
The new pickups, likely the fourth generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, will debut in 2018 as 2019 models. Aluminum and high strength steel allow makers to cut weight, improve fuel economy and performance.
