How fast is New Horizons travelling? A comparison infographic

NASA’s New Horizons space probe is the first man-made object to pay a visit to the dwarf planet Pluto, and on July 15 it passed within 12,500km (7,767mi) of its surface.

We know that the probe is travelling at 14km/s or 50,400km/h (31,317mph), and that that’s hugely quick in anyone’s money, but numbers that high are just a little hard to get a handle on.

To assess how quick it is, we’ve put New Horizons’ speed up against some seriously quick, but relatively turtle-like human-made items, such as the Bugatti Veyron and the Concorde jet.
