Other GM brands have small, affordable performance cars, but Chevrolet doesn’t. And that situation isn’t going to change any time soon, it seems.
When Automotive News asked Mark Reuss, GM’s product chief, about its plans for small performance cars that sit underneath the new Camaro, Reuss said, “I love those things. We know how to do them really well.”
Although Opel has a number of turbocharged front-wheel drive hot hatches, like the Adam S, Reuss doesn’t think the economic case adds up. Reuss said, “Capital is not a black hole. On those cars, the price point begins to approach the segment of the next car up. We would spend a lot of money and resources, and what are we really doing?”
Reuss did add some hope at the end. “The real question is: Is that a big priority? For now, no. Forever? I wouldn’t say that,” he told Automotive News.
The last time Chevrolet really toyed with the idea of small, performance cars was at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show. There it unveiled the FWD Tru 140S (below) and the RWD Code 130R (above). Both have a 1.4-litre turbo with around 150hp/112kW.
