Holden was founded in Adelaide in 1856 as a saddlery manufacturer. The company began building car bodies in 1919; at one stage the company produced bodies for Ford vehicles prior to the opening of Ford’s Geelong plant.
GM purchased the company in 1931, and the Holden name was chosen was for Australia’s first locally designed, engineered and produced vehicle.
