Launched in 1984, the original 4Runner was also known as the Hilux Surf in many markets, with the Japanese market name hinting at the SUV’s origins as a Hilux derivative.
In the last two generations, the 4Runner has migrated from being a Hilux-based SUV to one twinned with the Land Cruiser Prado. The current (N280) model is based on the 120-Series Prado, and sold primarily in the USA.
