Volkswagen XL Sport concept has 11,000rpm V2 Ducati engine

Based on the fuel sipping XL1, the Volkswagen XL Sport concept aims for visceral thrills instead of a fuel consumption rating under 1L/100km.

The XL Sport ditches the diesel-hybrid drivetrain of the XL1, with its 2-cylinder diesel motor, for a different type of 2-cylinder motivation: a 1.2-litre V2 Ducati engine from the company’s limited edition Superleggera motorcycle.

Developing 147kW (200PS) of power and 134Nm of torque, and able to hit revs as high as 11,000rpm, the XL Sport’s motor powers the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch (DSG) transmission.

Despite a wider, longer body with 18-inch alloys all around, the XL Sport tips the scales at just 890kg thanks to the car’s carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) body.

This, and a drag coefficient of just 0.258, enables the XL Sport concept to race from 0 to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds and hit a top of speed of 270km/h.

Unlike the XL1, which features narrow tyres and covered rear wheels, the XL Sport has all its wheels uncovered. The car rides on 205/40 tyres up front and 265/35 rubber at the rear.

It’s unknown how much fuel the XL Sport drinks.
