The Ford Mondeo was once one of the most popular cars in Europe, but SUVs and more affordable luxury cars have taken its place.
Launched in 1993 as a replacement for the Sierra (and effectively the Scorpio), the Mondeo went through three generations (two with big midlife facelifts).
Production of the Mondeo at Ford’s plant in Valencia, Spain, will end in March 2022. It will be eventually replaced by a high riding Outback style wagon/SUV with a hybrid powertrain, which may or may not use the Mondeo name.
Valenica’s engine factory will begin producing the 2.5L I4 hybrid powertrain from late 2022 for the new car. The powertrain is currently made in Mexico, and is used in the Mondeo, S-Max, and Galaxy.
Ford has told Automotive News Europe “the market segment in which the Mondeo competes has been dwindling for years and is down about 80 percent since 2000.”
The current Mondeo was also sold in North America as a the Fusion. Production of the Fusion (and the related Lincoln MKZ) ended in the middle of 2020.
