There are BMW M, Mercedes-AMG and Audi RS SUVs and sedans, but Honda wants to keep the Type R brand pure. It won’t even be used by the luxury Acura brand.
Hideki Kakinuma, project leader for the Civic Type R, and Ko Yamamoto, a Honda technical consultant, told Autoblog the Type R name and red H badge are only for cars related to racing. This means there won’t be a CR-V, Accord, Odyssey, Insight or Pilot Type R.
The Type R name is also reserved for the Honda brand, so it won’t be appearing on any Acura models. This includes the NSX, even though the original had a Type R version in Japan.
Acura is beginning to use the Type S name which has been dormant for a long time. This includes the 2019 concept (below) which previews the next generation TLX.
