2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS: Bigger, smoother, mild hybrid only in US

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS is based again on the GLE, but moves to the new MHA platform, and is bigger, smoother and more efficient than ever.


In the US, the GLS will initially be available with two gas engines:

  • GLS450 4Matic: I6 mild hybrid with 270kW (362hp) and 500Nm (369 lb-ft)
  • GLS580 4Matic: new V8 mild hybrid with 360kW (483hp) and 700Nm (516 lb-ft)

Both the GLS450 and GLS580 have an extra 16kW (21hp) and 250Nm (184 lb-ft) available for short bursts from the electric motor.

For Europe there’s also two version of the OM656 I6 turbo diesel:

  • GLS350d 4Matic: I6 with 210kW (286hp) and 600Nm (443 lb-ft)
  • GLS400d 4Matic: I6 with 243kW (330hp) and 700Nm (516 lb-ft)

All engines are equipped with a 9-speed auto, 4Matic AWD, and air suspension.

Available features include 40/20/40 split second row or captain’s chairs, 5-zone climate control, MBUX infotainment, a 7″ docked Android tablet for the rear seats, wireless phone charging, and a rear seat entertainment system with two 11.6″ touchscreens.
