Production of the Toyota Avensis sedan and wagon will end soon at the company’s Burnaston, UK, plant, with the car to be replaced by the new Camry Hybrid.
For Toyota, making a specific D segment car for Europe is no longer viable as sales have dropped dramatically. Just 3,473 Avensis saloons and estates were sold in the UK last year, with buyers preferring SUVs and diesel engines falling out of favor.
The Avensis has been sold in the Europe for 21 when it replaced the Carina E. The car has been through three generations, all without Toyota’s signature hybrid powertrain.
The Burnaston factory will get a £240 million upgrade to make vehicles on the TNGA platform.
