2018 Audi A1: Bigger, lighter, MQB-A0 based, 5-door only

The second generation Audi A1 rides on the MQB-A0 platform used by the Volkswagen Polo and Seat Ibiza, and is no longer available as a 3-door.


The sole body available is the 5-door Sportback model. Standard features include a 10.25″ digital instrumentation display, steering wheel buttons, lane departure warning, Pre Safe Front, McPherson strut front suspension, and torsion beam rear suspension.

Options include Virtual Cockpit instrumentation screen, sat nav, 10.1″ touchscreen, 11 speaker 550W B&O sound system, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, reversing camera, sports suspension, adjustable dampers, bigger brakes, and adaptive dynamics.

Four gas engines have been announced:

  • 25 TFSI: 70kW (94hp) – 1L 3-cylinder turbo*
  • 30 TFSI: 85kW (114hp) – 1L 3-cylinder turbo
  • 35 TFSI: 110kW (148hp) – 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo with cylinder on demand
  • (Unknown name) TFSI: 147kW (197hp) – 2L 4-cylinder turbo

    * Not available at launch

    All these engines have turbocharging and direct injection. A manual transmission is standard, and a dual-clutch automatic available (6-speed in the 2L, and 7-speed everywhere else).

    The Audi A1 is available across Europe for order during the summer of 2018, and goes on sale in the fall of 2018. First deliveries in the UK start in November 2018.

    Prices start from around €20,000 (US$23,300) in Germany.
