Every new Maserati released after 2019 will have an electrified powertrain, and will be Fiat Chrysler’s leading brand for electric cars.
In an earnings call, Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler, said, “When [Maserati] completes the development of its next two models, it will effectively switch all of its portfolio to electrification.
“As these products come up for renewal post 2019, it will start launching vehicles which are all-electric and which embody, I think, what will be considered state of the art technology.”
Quite a turn around for the man who urged the public not to buy the Fiat 500e as it was losing US$8,300 on every car sold.
Fiat Chrysler is behind other carmakers in rolling out hybrid, plugin hybrid and electric cars. By 2022, half the FCA range will be electrified in some way, with Maserati leading the way.
The only FCA hybrid on sale right now is the Chrysler Pacifica Plugin Hybrid.
Remember Marchionne is retiring in 2019, and Maserati and Alfa Romeo’s plans have been consistently delayed during his time as boss. Who knows if this latest plan will work out?
