NissanTiida

Nissan Tiida etymology: What does its name mean?

The Nissan Tiida first appeared on an awkward looking hatch and sedan that fits in above the March and Micra, but what does its weird name mean?

Tiida means sun in the Okinawan dialect of Japanese. Although it’s still an odd name to affix to a such a mass market car — there’s just something weird about the double-i combination for English speakers — there is a certain method to the madness.

The first-generation Tiida replaced the Nissan Sunny in many markets, so the Tiida name is a subtle — possibly too subtle, unless you know some Okinawan — nod to the departed Sunny.
