The new Renault Alaskan is the brand’s first global mid-size pick-up, but why is the truck named after a place that it’ll never be sold in?
According to Renault, the Alaskan is inspired by the Aleut word “Alaska”, which means great land. For the French car maker, the name “conjures up wild, rugged landscapes and is an open invitation to indulge the desire for adventure”.
The Aleut live on the Aleutian Islands and Shumagin Islands in Alaska, as well as Kamchatka Krai in Russia.
Given that Renault has no presence in either Canada or the United States, you’ll probably only see a Renault Alaskan in Alaska if someone drives their truck up from Mexico or even further south.
