2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness: Better offroad, but much uglier

The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness is the model’s most capable version offroad, but the styling updates make it the ugliest yet.

It’s the damn fender protectors with their weird shape. Why not just go with round ones like the regular Outbakc?

The Outback Wilderness is fitted with the more powerful 2.4L turbo H4 and AWD as standard, and has 194kW (260hp) and 376Nm (277 lb-ft). Unfortunately the CVT is still there.

Ground clearance has been increased to 9.5-in (241mm), and there’s also retuned suspension and a rear differential with a final drive ratio of 4.44:1. There are preset driving modes for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud.

Matt black 17-in wheels with Yokohama Geolandr tires are standard, as are new front and rear bumpers, a front skid plate, and anodized copper finishes for the interior.
