In 2022 Mazda (in the US, at least) will have two compact SUVs: the new CX-50 and the CX-5. See what’s different in this comparison.
CX-50CX-5
The CX-50 is a US only model based on the latest platform shared with CX-30 and Mazda 3, and it's due to be available from summer 2022. The CX-5 is an older global model, launched in 2016 and based on the platform of the original 2012 car.
CX-50CX-5
Mazda has yet to release all the details about the new CX-50. We believe it will be around the same length as the CX-5, but it will be wider.
CX-50CX-5
The CX-50 will be priced upmarket from the CX-5, and it has more masculine offroad styling than the CX-5 which is softer and city focused.
CX-50CX-5
At launch the CX-50 will have a Mazda 2.5L I4 making 186hp (139kW) and a turbo 2.5L I4 with 250hp (186kW). A Toyota 2.5L I4 hybrid is rumored to appear later. The CX-5 is also available with the same 2.5L I4 choices, as well 2L I4 and turbo-diesel options outside of the US.
CX-50CX-5
The CX-50 has all of Mazda's Kodo design language, but with squarer features, including those fender flares and wheel arch protectors.
CX-50CX-5
There's nothing outdoors or offroad about the CX-50's interior. It's classy (almost luxurious) and simple, and very similar to the CX-5's. There's a wider infotainment screen (which isn't a touchscreen) and vertical vents.
