SsangYong has confirmed that it enter the US market in 2020 with the Tivoli subcompact SUV, and the larger compact Korando crossover.
Choi Johng-sik, SsangYong CEO, told Automotive News that the company will launch two small SUVs in the USA by 2020.
The initial range will include a facelift of the new Tivoli SUV, and the larger Korando, which uses a stretched version of the Tivoli’s platform.
Owned by Indian car maker Mahindra & Mahindra, SsangYong is developing a 121kW (168hp) 1.5-liter turbo I4 engine, and a 164kW (220hp) 2-liter turbo I4 engine. These engines will be used in the Tivoli and Korando when they launch in the US.
Choi said that making a success of its US entry will be difficult: “America is very, very competitive, so we need to build a good brand. That’s why we’re now preparing completely new products.”
So long as they don’t bring anything as awful as the Rodius (below), that’s fine by us.
