Peter Horbury, the designer who transformed Volvo, is making his mark at its Chinese parent and the new Geely Icon is its most distinctive vehicle yet.
Because of its style and impressive tech sheet, the Icon received 30,000 orders in the hours after preorders opened.
The exterior was done in California and the interior in Barcelona, and the final job brought to completion in Shanghai.
The Icon has a 48V mild hybrid powertrain with a 1.5L turbo I4 mild hybrid with 130kW (174hp) and 255Nm (188 lb-ft), 7-speed DCT, and an electric motor that can give a short burst of an extra 10kW (13hp) and 45Nm (33lb-ft).
The 0-100km/h time is 7.9s.
Because of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, the N95 certified intelligent air purification system is sure to be a big selling point.
The Icon interior has a “futuristic sci-fi feel” with two 10.25″ screens and the latest GKUI interface. Flush pop out door handles keep the exterior simple and minimalist.
There’s also 12 ultrasonic radars, a millimeter wave radar, and 5 HD cameras to enable single lane Level 2 autonomous driving with adaptive cruise, lane keeping assist and autonomous emergency braking, one button automated parking, and surround view camera system.
