Ram’s Heavy Duty pickups (2500, 3500 and cab-chassis) were due to move onto the 1500’s new DT platform in 2018, but that plan has reportedly been scrapped.
Sources have told Automotive News that to save money, Fiat Chrysler will instead keep the Ram Heavy Duty trucks on the current DS platform and with their current body in white.
Instead the trucks will be refreshed, probably with new design touches and upgrades.
This move will save money at a time when Fiat Chrysler is redesigning the Jeep Wrangler and Ram 1500, and paying down debt.
All of Ram’s heavy duty trucks are built in Saltillo, Mexico, so scrapping an all new heavy duty truck range will ensure continued supply with no down time.
The company has also paused plans to build a LWB Jeep Grand Wagoneer based on the next generation Grand Cherokee.
