Just four years after entering production, the Mazda CX-5 has been replaced by a new model. See the differences in this side-by-side photo comparison.

The 2017 second-generation Mazda CX-5 has all new body panels, but isn't an all new car. The first- and second-generation CX-5 crossovers both ride on the same SkyActiv platform. They share same 2,700mm (106.3-in) wheelbase, and length (4,549mm / 179.1), width (1,842mm / 72.5-in) and height (1,659mm / 65.3-in) are all practically the same.

The overall profile and, even, the side window shapes are carried over. The second-generation (2017) CX-5 does have smoother body surfacing, a bit less black plastic cladding, and the rear doors now no longer feature rear quarter lights.

Again, the overall shape is the similar between the two cars, but the 2017 CX-5 has finer details, such as thinner headlights and tail-lights.

The biggest changes, to our eyes, occur on the inside. The dashboard, centre tunnel and door panels are all new, and the interior ambience is much improved with better quality materials, classier styling, and the infotainment system is now housed in free-standing tablet-style screen.

The new CX-5 is offered with lightly upgraded version of Mazda's 2 and 2.5-litre SkyActiv direct-injection 4-cylinder petrol engines, and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. In the USA, only the 2.5-litre petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel are available on the second-generation model.

Sadly it seems that boot space has shrunk with the new CX-5. It's EPA trunk space rating is now 875L (30.9 cu-ft) with the rear seats and measured all the way to ceiling. The first-generation model had an EPA rating of 966L (34.1 cu-ft).

Both the first- and second-generation CX-5 models seat five people across two rows.

A 6-speed automatic will be the choice of most buyers, but there's also a 6-speed manual available. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.
