The second generation GMC Acadia will make its debut at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show next week, closing the ten year long run of the original Theta-based crossover.
The original Theta crossovers went on sale at the end of 2006 when the GMC Acadia and the very closely related Saturn Outlook went on sale. This was followed by the rounded, softer Buick Enclave, and finally the Chevrolet Traverse.
Based on Theta platform, all these crossovers had SUV styling, car-like monocoque construction, and minivan flexibility. Together they finally meant that GM had a successful minivan, albeit one styled like an SUV, after decades of trying.
Whether fitted with all wheel drive or front wheel drive, all Theta models are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 and 6-speed automatic.
The new model should be lighter, more efficient and technologically up to date than today’s 10 year old model.
