The second generation Ford GT, which will debut as a 2017 model, will be the first car to use Gorilla Glass hybrid windshield windows.
Ford says that the new Gorilla Glass windows will save over 12 pounds (5.4kg) and will be around 30 percent lighter than a traditional windshield.
Gorilla Glass is commonly used on smartphones and tablets. For its first non-electronic automotive application, the Gorilla Glass hybrid windshield has an annealed glass outer layer, a toughened hybrid inner layer, and a noise-absorbing thermoplastic interlayer center.
The Gorilla Glass windshield measures between 3mm and 4mm thick, whereas traditional windshields are 4mm to 6mm thick.
