2018 Lincoln Navigator vs Ford Expedition: Sibling differences

The 2018 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator are ready to take on their GM rivals. This side-by-side photo comparison shows the siblings’ differences.

Both have aluminium bodies, and are based on the Ford F-150 pickup truck. Similarly both have a 3.5-litre turbo V6.

The Navigator has a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 with 336kW (450hp), and a 10-speed auto. The Expedition is listed as having a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 and a 10-speed auto, although no power figures are cited.

The new Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition are, once again, clearly very closely related with identical doors, windscreens, underlying structure, and overall body shape.
Navigator
Expedition
The Navigator does have a softer front-end design, and has a completely unique front fascia, headlights, grille, hood, and front fenders. Although the Expedition has a completely different front-end to the related F-150 pickup truck, the Ford version of the big SUV is clearly trying to tie itself to its truck roots.

At the rear, the Navigator has a slightly different tailgate design with full-width tail-lights and different bumpers. Along the sides, the Navigator has blacked out C-pillars for a continuous side window look, and some extra chrome and grey trim around the lower door sills.

Expedition
While there's not as much visual differentiation as we'd like with the exterior, Ford has gone to great lengths with the interior. While the Expedition's interior seems to be plucked straight out of the F-150, albeit with better wood and leather trim, the Navigator's cabin is all new. There's a higher quality dashboard design, and free-standing tablet-style infotainment system.

The Navigator also features Lincoln's unique seat styling, which made their debut on the latest Continental. Up front, the Navigator has Perfect Position seats with 30-way electric adjustment, and heating and cooling elements.

Expedition
The Ford Expedition goes long on family practicality with middle row seats that can be moved and tipped forward without needing to move or remove an installed child seat. The Navigator, on the other hand, is available captain's style seats and fixed centre console.

You can fit three people in both the Navigator and Expedition's rear pews.

Expedition
The Navigator has a buttons on the dashboard for its automatic transmission, rather than a traditional shifter unit. The Expedition has a greater emphasis on off-roading with various drive modes, differential locking, and high- and low-range four-wheel drive.

We're not sure if the Navigator's seats fold flat, but they certainly aren't emphasised in the press material.

The Expedition has a tiered storage solution for the boot.

Both cars have panoramic sunroofs, but the Navigator's free-standing front seatback displays look classier.
